But as i look around sacramento, reno, vacaville and any of the "greater bay area" towns are unrelentlessly getting pricier and pricier (2k+ to rent a 3br on the low end) and dont have the upgrades to justify it. You can rent a 3 bdrm house in Sacramento for less than $2,000 - where are you checking prices? Generally you should find more jobs in the mental health field in California than in Nevada because a good about of mental health care is government funded and Nevada has traditionally underfunded mental health

Agree about Henderson and Summerlin being the better areas for kids.

I have friends whose kids grew up here, were educated here, and are very successful. Heck, that describes many of my own friends who were raised in Vegas.

If a kid has decent family who sets rules and cares about their well being, they can live almost everywhere.

Roseville

Elmhurst (East Sac)
(duplex)

Carmichael
(duplex)

I didn't spend a lot of time looking, but there are homes out there in that price range. My neighbor owns a bunch of duplexes in Carmichael and rents 3 bdrm units for $1200.

Vegas is the child trafficking headquarters of the United States. Try somewhere like the midwest or Deep South.

Where do you get this garbage. Las Vegas is probably one of the toughest places in the US tp be an older teen because the whole system is set up to keep you from straying.

Terrible place to be a normal teenager from 16 to 19. And even 20 year olds suffer.

Scaramento is the midwest of CA, that is as far midwest I'd go.

You have to be involved in your child's life, know their friends, etc just like anywhere. My kid is in public school and he is extremely smart but let me tell you public schools suck in a lot of places. Just because SF is an expensive city doesn't mean they've used the money to improve the public schools. California public schools overall rate very low.

I guess this forum will just be people discouraging me from moving, but of course, I will make my own decision.

My kids after school program is 350 per month, vs clark county public school after school care being $17 for the year and it runs longer. Affordable childcare is a huge factor in what jobs I can accept. As I said my ex doesn't help with the daily stuff due to the distance.

Also, Vallejo is not very affordable, especially not San Leandro. Homes run 300k+ in Vallejo, 500k+ in San Leandro for somewhat decent. Apts in Vallejo are going to be at least 1600-1800/month. Anything less than that would be extremely run down and again not the kind of life my kids should be subjected to. craigslist are showing me A LOT of very pretty apartment complexes with 3 bedrooms, central air, etc going for 900-1200 in Vegas. I'm seeing alot of decent, turn key starter homes for sale at 215k around there which is a realistic figure for me once I start working and am settled.

Funnily enough, I'm seeing more children's activities in vegas such as church functions than I do here in SF, so I'm not sure why you think its a bad idea to raise kids in vegas. I'd go to salt lake city, little rock, or any other number of cities but the distance being shortest and plethora of decent paying jobs in my field vs realistically affordable COL makes vegas my best bet so far. I'm still researching though.
Don’t move here yet. Visit, in August and look at our billboards. Drive by Foremaster Lane.
Understand that your children will go to school with kids whose parents are strung out, absent, or working two jobs. Not all of them of course, but this isn’t like other towns. Note also that Nevada doesn’t have much of a social safety net.

Reno is closer to you, and has a feel more like N. Cal.

I recommend Vegas mostly for retirees with a bit of money who can enjoy the restaurants and casinos and not worry too much about children or work.
