Ahoy!

I'm thinking of moving to the Las Vegas area and working in the boating industry. I've been to every local boating website, social media page, Yelp, google maps, etc... collecting information on what the boating scene is like in Vegas. From my perspective, Lake Mead is a gorgeous lake with clean water, beautiful mountains, lots of coves, a variety of unique wildlife and open space for miles. There seems to be many dealerships selling all the top model boats, a great marina complex at Lake Mead Marina, and all the resources a boat owner would need to enjoy a top notch boating lifestyle.

My plan is to take a trip to Las Vegas in the next few weeks in order to get a first-hand feel. However, I'd like to get the local's perspective on what the attitude/perception is like towards boating on Lake Mead. From a distance it looks like a fantastic place to work/play in the boating industry. What do you think of when you think of boating on Lake Mead? What has your experience been like? Thanks in advance for your input!

I would have to say it depends a lot on what type of boating you are talking about. I can only speak towards the wakeboard/wakesurf inboard boats. One of the local dealers is Boulder Boats and they sell Malibu as well as have access to other brands as well as Skeeter outboards etc.

Also, it probably depends on if you are a salesman or a mechanic. The boat mecca probably is Lake Havasu and if you are a cigarette boat mechanic you can probably write your own ticket. There are a lot of Personal Watercraft there too as well as a multitude of major brand boat dealers. If you are a fiberglass repair person that too could be lucrative.

Only problem with Lake Havasu Arizona is state income tax. Not so in Nevada. But you will pay through the nose for vehicle license tabs in Nevada.

I’m not a boater, but a friend who is, said lake mead is choppy and not so much fun to ski on.

Lake Mead is huge, and parts of it are quite beautiful. A dear friend of mine from the Midwest was simply stunned by it. I've rented boats there and Havasu, and didn't find a real difference in conditions. Havasu is hot though. This place is hot, but Havasu is really really hot. Like ten degrees hotter than here, which is a lot in the spring and summer.

Lake Mead has large drop offs, can be choppy because of the size and the wind here, but I think it's worth renting a boat and checking it out. Lake Mohave is also nearby. Boulder City which is close to LM is a charming community, but rather expensive.
