I moved here last year and was shocked to learn about the corrupt Guardian system that has been exploiting senior citizens. Now there is a new film released about this issue. It was showing today at a film festival at The Orleans — but I am contagious sick with a bad cold so couldn’t go. Sure wish there would be repeat showings. Has anyone seen this movie?

It's on Amazon Prime, I'm finishing it now. Wow, what they did I couldn't imagine in my worst dreams! Judicially-sponsored kidnapping and theft! I've been researching the Vegas area as a potential retirement destination, but I'd rather pay state taxes in Utah or Arizona than risk this as I age.

Isn't this very old news about a situation that was brought to light and dealt with?

I just stumbled upon it on Amazon Prime. Looks like it was partially dealt with, but a lot of the crooks who ran the system haven't faced any repercussions.

It was dealt with pretty much. Can happen again though and has happened in lots of places. This one was somewhat unusual in that the perps had government authority.

I would think it has little likelihood if you are cogent or you have reasonable family contacts. It is those who are fully or mostly isolated that have the problem.

We deal with the very elderly all the time as part of our RE practice is oriented at the very mature. It is only a very narrow set of people who are at risk.

I just recently saw it on Prime (hadn't known about it previously).

It scared me enough into getting a living will done with an advance directive and power of attorney to someone in my family. Not that my family wouldn't rob me either but at least they wouldn't cart me off to to a roach infested nursing home, I hope.

I thought one of the main companies (who was exploiting people) was busted and as a result there were new changes done to the 'system'.

Here is a good recent synopsis of what has changed from KNPR...

https://knpr.org/knpr/2019-02/guardi...there-progress

They note the public guardian has been cleaned up a good bit but you still can be taken advantage of by a family member guardian. So select carefully.

Watched it last night. Chilling. And everyone thinking this only happens in NV is wrong. Happens in other places too.

Who is this teflon coated Jason Schafer person and how is he so 'connected' that he escaped prosecution? And why are those judges still on the bench? Commissioners still commissioners?

I was a court appointed guardian for my father. It was a lot of work and a lot of responsibility. I had to submit to the court an accounting of every penny spent from my father's estate. In one of the court room videos it came to light that Jason Schafer had never submitted any accounting of expenses in 12 years and the elderly person's money, 400K, was just gone. That right there should have been enough to put him in jail. He is still out there free. They stole an awful lot of money. People died because of what they did. Others spent years drugged up in nursing homes or psych wards. And the only 'crime' they committed was being old.

I also wondered how all these people could say they did not know what was happening. Where were all the certified letters that were required? They would go to post office and have the victims mail forwarded BEFORE guardianship had been granted by the court so the certified letters and notifications were received by the people stealing their assets. I thought that was a Federal crime. How many of these people's constitutional rights were violated? I can think of several. So where were the Feds? And why wasn't the state held responsible as well?

All in all this case was sort of like putting a bandaid on a sucking chest wound. When April Parks was finally convicted/put in jail. I thought justice had been done. But she was one of many and perhaps just a convenient scapegoat they used to make the problem go away? Yes, she was guilty and got what she deserved but what about the rest of them?
