I currently live in Iowa but plan to move by the beginning of the year. I'm looking for a 3 bedroom apt that's not to costly. I'm thinking around 900 from what I've seen online. Id like a place with lil crime if there is such a thing. A good move in special would be wonderful. No rats, mice or things I've got to fix myself. I'm African American so Id like to know what town can I move to that's not far from the strip. I'd like to feel comfortable and can find some sort of production work asap.
Thanks in advice for any positive advice.

Not for 900. Unless in a rough area, closer to 1400 easy

I think $900 for a 3-bedroom is very unrealistic. I pay $1200 for a 1-bedroom in an ok area. Also, not sure what production work you do, but it can be somewhat hard to find jobs in Las Vegas and wages aren't necessarily high.

Have you been to the area before? It sounds like you're not terribly familiar with it. I strongly encourage to visit and get a feel for it before moving. Las Vegas is not the strip. Stay away from the touristy areas and drive to N. Las Vegas, Henderson and even Boulder city to get a feel for the area.

I visited Vegas many times over many years before I moved here. I had my eyes open and I knew what I could afford and where to live. Before I moved, I also had a job in place, since I work in a non-hospitality/gaming related field.

Other than that, I find Vegas to be a very inclusive place. I'm sure there are enclaves where that isn't true, but I can only speak to my experiences.

Just my two cents...

Vegas is a place for dreamers... Go big or go home, OP should aim for a 5br house in Henderson for $800.

We have lots of jobs but few that pay enough to make a living. You need to visit before you move here. A 3br apartment for $900 most likely won't happen.

As a former Iowan (West Des Moines) I can tell that you will pay more to live here than where you are now. We took a 10% hit when we moved. Things are not cheap here compared to Iowa.

You know that on-sale 25 cent Anderson Erickson yogurt you get at HyVee? 70-75 cents for Yoplait here. Almost all food products cost more.

Around $900 seems more what one should expect to pay for a ONE bedroom in a well maintained complex and better than not so good area

Hi Sandra! We really don't have "individual" towns here in the Las Vegas valley. The actual towns here are Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson. Outside of the political and tax situations specific to each, all are just kind of mashed together. Also, much of the area surrounding the Strip is actually part of Clark County, not part of the city of Las Vegas. Outside the area is Boulder City, which is about 15 miles from Henderson and 30 miles from the center of Las Vegas.

As to where you could move to, I would stay away from areas close to the Strip given your interest in low cost housing. The areas close to the Strip that are low cost are some of the most dangerous areas in the city. For instance, in my job a few years ago, I was given a "tour" of Naked City (an area next to the Stratosphere). My guide was wearing a pistol as he was escorting me around the area--and this was daylight.

As others have said, please come for a fact-finding trip before moving out here. All-in-all, Las Vegas is a pleasant place to live, but you really need to take a look at it before moving--it's not for everyone.

Good luck!

I miss AE yogurt! Cherry Vanilla tastes like my childhood. I lived in Urbandale but went to WDM Valley. Class of 96.
