I've been educated in this thread. Several posters here - very reliable people - have pointed out many people do indeed move to a new city with no job. I had always assumed it was a tiny fraction of the workforce, but clearly I'm wrong on that.

When I've moved cities prior to retirement, it was always because I was recruited to a new job in a new city - and the hiring company paid all my expenses to move.

I answered your comment. Retired folks at a minimum have social security and most have savings.
