It has been 20 years on and off for me in this city. Mostly good times. Made some money. Met some interesting people. Enjoyed the desert scenery and the sun.

But, Las Vegas has "jumped the shark" for me. I don't have the motivation anymore to live here. I think it was the lack of a culture with substance that really finished me off. Add the corporate nonsense. The schools named after people with no academic or significant achievements other than silly casino ties or other meaningless backgrounds. The poor schools. The heat in the summer. On and on I could go.

So, when did Las Vegas "jump the shark" for you?

Syracuse native? I spent this past weekend at Turning Stone; ended up at the Syracuse bus station Monday night, as my friend and I needed a ride back to Buffalo. Even if Vegas jumped the shark some time ago, in your view, 'Cuse probably lost its appeal at an even earlier time. I'm not the biggest Vegas fan, but I'll be there this summer for the WSOP.

Are you planning to return to CNY, or are you headed elsewhere?

Thanks for your post.

It all came back for me, and I am very high on Syracuse. The stock here, in CNY, has went to the moon in my opinion, as I have matured in life.

Vegas is just a "media" city, full of nonsense.

Syracuse, is a "natural" city, with tons of value. This is more true if you value "beyond organic" foods, nature, and a less stressed out city.

I guess I benefit from the brainwashed masses that think NYC, LA, and cities like Vegas, are actually good places to live.

I am very happy I got Vegas "out of my system" in my 30s and 40s, because I would have wasted my best years, my late years in life, on a city that is totally out of touch with reality.

I moved here five years ago for the weather, entertainment and restaurants. The cost of lots of shows and restaurants is so high now, I don't go. The addition of all the sports stuff holds no interest for me. It increases the number of tourists which brings in money, but also headaches like crime and traffic. I live in a nice area of Henderson and rarely go to The Strip, so it doesn't have much impact on me. The increase in local traffic due to all the people moving here kinda sucks.

I like the weather and my house, so I guess I'll stay a while longer. I miss the smaller town where I lived most of my life, things are still a lot more simple there. There are good restaurants and entertainment options, without the hassle of big city traffic, but the weather is not very good. The grass is not always greener on the other side, and the cost and hassle of moving are more than I want to deal with again.

Henderson is very nice. I have lived in Green Valley Ranch and Summerlin, both great spots.

Vegas is changing so much. Traffic does continue to get worse. Its dangerous to drive into the strip these days, and I wouldn't recommend it.

As for living in smaller towns or cities, I think it not only is much better, but you can expect to add about a 5-15 years on your life span, assuming you have a diet consisting of mostly meat and not processed foods. The less pollution and less nit wits you have to deal with in these cities is certainly better than the bigger cities.

Probably about 1997. In the preceding 5 years the city was growing at an unbelievable rate, infrastructure couldn't keep up. When I moved into my first house back then (1992), in South Shores at Summerlin, the exit going up Lake Mead from 95 was still dirt from 95 up to Buffalo. I left in 1997 and came back after finally retiring for good in 2020. I could not believe what had happened to LV in the way of growth. Where I used to go shooting, houses. Where I used to go four wheeling, houses. Strip malls on every available strip of land. I took one look, decided it probably hadn't aged gracefully and made the move to Nye County. I don't regret it, anything I need in LV I can get to in about an hour. An hour is nothing, when I lived in Montana driving 3 hours to go shopping or meet friends for lunch was considered normal.

I was living in Northern Thailand when the markets crashed in 2008. Came back to the US, and bought a condo in Summerlin for 35,400. Even the part time work scene was pathetic in 2009. I sold nine months later, and was glad to go back to Phoenix. I enjoyed the pool, the sun, and some great groceries at Vons, but was disappointed in the fakieness of the whole area. I had previously lived across the river from Laughlin for a couple of years, and subbed at Mohave High School. I should have known better..the joke for years had been that Vegas as the new family destination on the cover of TIME was the end of the fun...about 2000, i recall. It works for many, but it was the first time I felt that keeping my business degree to myself, might be the best way to become employed. A few years later, a fellow teacher in Phoenix told me he, too, had been through the Vegas turnstile during the same era, and couldn't convince the CVS manager to hire him at 7.50 per hour part time. Some forum members were commuting to Amazon in Pahrump for about the same...just to stay above water...it was a fun time on this forum.
Captains crime map....priceless.

That could be, but they were driving 80 miles or so to work for Amazon. I'll have to think about it. Was in NV, and was discussed extensively in this forum. I think it was the same facility where a. court ruled they didn't have to get paid for waiting thirty minutes to go through security to leave.

Well considering my home of NYC jumped the shark 20+ years ago, Vegas sounds fine to me. Can't wait to get out there.
