i wouldn't say the views on the southern route are bad...you just need to have an appreciation for the desert SW. below are some pics i found online...hardly what i would call horrendous:

now....my home turf defended, i will say that given the time of year, i would take the northern route. plus the CO rockies and Utah canyon-country are truly beautiful.

had a minor glitch with new (yes new) tires from sears, out of balance, rebalancing as i type... leaving in less than 24hrs....

left today (tuesday) at noon eastern time.... stopped for night in Omaha (drove straight.. dogs whined for 2hrs, slept the rest)
