I have heard that education is not a high point in Las Vegas with around 60% of high school students dropping out. It also seems as if being in college in Las Vegas is different than the mainstream of individuals in the 18-22+ age range.

So my questions are:

A) Do young people in Vegas often get jobs after high school? What kind of jobs?

B) What do people think of education in Las Vegas? If I told someone I'm taking classes at UNLV is that considered impressive generally speaking?

Thanks in advance.

if you were in high school in vegas (previously, not now) and got a chance to be a valet parker at a major strip hotel making 80k at age 18, wouldn't you drop out?

they usually go into retail or fast food and then they either get promoted or after 5-10 years go back to school...or they move to another state...

college also isn't mainstream because the district does nothing to encourage going to college besides college fairs...there's not enough counselors to help with the process or to spend time with you...

i also went to a financial aid day sponsored by CSN and the district, and i was only one of 5 students who showed up, that should show you how much ppl care about education...

ppl in vegas generally don't care about education, just look at the RJ's opinion section...its seen as a waste of money...

i can elaborate more, but i would be writing a book...

I wish our schools had better ratings and less drop outs. With big cities come big city problems. With the income from the casinos it is sad that we rank so poorly. Hopefully, in the future we can change that.

I would push my children go to school somewhere outside of Las Vegas so they can experience living somewhere outside of this bubble and hopefully inspire them to leave the valley to pursue their career.

I don't think there is anything wrong with going to UNLV. They have some good programs, but as far as the "college experience" it seems more like a community college than a public university. It does not seem to offer a rich social and cultural experience that often accompanies higher education.

if i had kids, i dont think i would consider vegas... needs better schools... as for college, the above poster is correct, unlv seems like a community college... unless you are going for hospitality mgmt, i would definitely go elsewhere....

Well the whole college experience is definately not my cup of tea. I think what defines the college experience may be the freedom to stay up all night, play Halo with the guys, skip class bc you wanted to sleep in, meet people, go out, do things, play beer pong, getting drunk for the first time for many, maybe even getting some lovin' after a party haha, etc etc

I go to a VERY typical college that probably coined the term "college experience" and I hate it. To me it's boring.

So for me I'm not coming to UNLV for the college lifestyle. All I want from
UNLV is my B.A.

Now Vegas that's a different story haha I'm looking to get wild in "sin city" lol (strip clubs etc)

So my point is don't look too much into the "college experience" In my opinion simply put - it sucks.
