Was considering moving there until I visited again a few months back. Everything from a group of 20 somethings outside the CVS across from the Hard Rock making rude comments to one of the girls with us, nearly leading to a fight, to gang bangers doing drug deals outside an AM/PM, to the overall sagging pants gang banger feel around the strip. Not to mention the number of murders and violent crimes escalating. It wasnt like this even 5 years ago. I would be moving to Summerlin or Henderson but still, I dont want to have to stay away from the strip [mod cut-language] thats all there is to do for entertainment out there. Did I just go on a bad weekend?

There is so much more to do here besides go to the strip.

So, the solution is don't move here and {or} don't come back for vacation if you feel your safety is in jeopardy.

If you must, only take infrequent trips here from wherever you live so you're not in town so much. If you're not in town so much you won't be inclined to spend so much time on the Strip. If you can't spend so much time on the Strip you'll cut your chances of getting killed or gangbanged by the saggy pants crowd.

Dilemma solved.

I lived there for a year and only went to the strip only a couple of times. Once when the guy I was dating booked a room for us during my birthday week, and a couple more times when I had out of town friends visit. When you live there, you discover so many more things to do that the Strip kind of fades into the background, at least it did for me.

I am inclined to suspect that you are not on the list of people who would make a contribution to Las Vegas by moving here. However.

The areas immediately off the strip have long been areas where one should be cautious. In fact if you don't know your way around stay on the strip. The Hard Rock is not on the strip and the nearby neighborhoods require local knowledge.

Crime is well down over five years. The strip has been the sight of some spectacular crimes recently...but unless you are into the spectacular scene the crime experienced by real people is down. And it has been going down for decades...including during the recession.

Las Vegas is a big active city. It has all the normal stuff of normal southwestern communities plus the unique strip. Restaurants, Bars, Little Theater, anything you can find elsewhere except big time sports.

So unless you are in love with the the big time sports you should find everything you want with the strip as a bonus.

Let me be clear, I am not some random tourist just going to the strip for the weekend and staying at MGM Grand. I have spent plenty of time in Nevada. This last time, I was in the Spring Valley area for a week. Before that, it was Henderson for a week, before that, it was Summerlin. I am quite familiar with the area. However, it seems to be getting worse around the strip, even a few miles out. I hadnt noticed this up until recently. So no need for you locals to get all sensitive, its a legitimate question...

YES! Clark County is one big ghetto. Don't be fooled by those exclusive housing developments around town and billion dollar developments on the Strip. The elite or the ones running this town are the biggest ghetto of them all. I will give you a couple of examples. The owner of a billion dollar resort would rather have tarp on one of his buildings instead of selling it or leasing it to a hotel chain so it could be finished. This town and the elite in this town makes it hard for competition to come in. You are only hearing of foreign competition recently but such is not the case for a long time. Worse the county commissioners even approved of tarp instead of having these buildings' construction finished.

Another great example are the two public art pieces at the Arts District, these two flashlight looking paintbrushes were installed a few years ago and it cost nearly 700,000 dollars. Local officials were in awe of these two garbage pieces of "art". The artist envisioned two painbrushes welcoming people to the arts district and what the city got does not even look like paintbrushes but many locals and public officials were all happy with these two "flashlights". Many people here are definitely not sophisticated, they are GHETTO!

Hey nothing personal. You did not come on as a friendly.

The areas around the strip has always been difficult. Only a block or so off and you are likely to get into trouble.

No it is not getting worse. In some areas it is clearly getting better. But there is no gentrification going on in neighborhoods near the strip. Some heavy duty gentrification downtown but not off strip.

So a few blocks off. Particular east and things are pretty raunchy. Not new though. Was far worse ten years ago.

I think you have simply discovered things new to you. But they have been that way a long time. The strip remains very safe even though you run into the CA gang bangers out for the weekend. Try a big fight or the basketball tourneys if you really want a thrill.
