Hello everyone, My husband & I have been wanting to move to Vegas for over a year now..I had wanted to wait to save at least 20k before moving out there, well now it's the worse time ever for unemployment but I promised my husband that if we saved that amount we would move..well now we have saved 25k. We plan on going out there in March staying for 3 weeks, staying in a hotel, renting a car to go off the strip to look for jobs and apartments. I was wondering does anyone think we have a chance to make it, I figure if we cant find jobs for awhile then that's ok that's why we saved all this money. I know there will be alot of people saying no stay where u are, and some will say the other..I know just after the beginning of the year is a bad time to try to find a job..but isn't anytime of the year really??..Just wondering what the best time if any of the year would be best..Thanx..Just wanted some honest opinions!

What kind of jobs are you looking for?

In past years, around March has been the time businesses start hiring.

If you have jobs, I'd say keep them until the economy improves.

Yes, come out here. You have enough money to last for a year easily. The job market is still bad, but you are going about the right right way.

U-Haul reports that the cost for renting their moving vans in Las Vegas is one of the highest in the nation. They say it's a supply and demand thing that is controlling those prices...cost is higher where demand is greatest.

Move there at your own risk...but please don't blame the city, bad luck, etc. if it doesn't work out as planned. In the end, it's your own concious decision, made with whatever economic factors are widely publicized.

If you were able to save 25k doing what you do now I would stay put.
I did what you want to do, stayed in a hotel while looking for a home.
I bought my home March 2009 and I will be moving there soon. I have a job that I can take with me though.
The expenses are very high in this city, gas, groceries, household goods etc. I would not leave until you know where you are going. You can apply for jobs online but there are no jobs worth having imho

With good planning and not going crazy spending that saved up money once you get here, AND...providing you both can be employed relatively quickly, I'd say WHY NOT?

I'd like to ask you though, why do you want to move to Las Vegas so much?

Always find it fascinating to find out all the reasons why folks like to come here to live. I always agree with them as well, LOL!

Much good luck kitty!

I don't know why people keep on deciding to move to a town thats imploding due to the recession. Once the recession is over around the world; Vegas will still be in a recession. Do want you want, but I can tell you would be making a disaster. Lets put it this way, move to Detroit now. What you see in Detroit is whats coming Vegas way.

I am not sure I disagree with the logic behind why you saved the money. People typically save money if they, unexpectedly, have increased expenditures or decreased incomes. You don't save money to choose to be unemployed and search for employment in a town with 13.9% (official) unemployment. The real unemployment is probably 20-22%. Those are the numbers from September of 2009 and it might be a bit worse by March 2010.

Unless you have employment lined up (or strong leads), moving to LV may not be the best decision. Think of all the work it took to save $25K; it's a lot easier to spend a good % of this than to save it.

You know the old saying about a bird in the hand, right?

Las Vegas averages about 8% higher than the national average for living expenses. Real Estate is at blue light special prices right now and rents are artifically low due to the glut of private rentals on the market.

That being said, our job growth is painful right now and there are hundreds of applications for each available job. Highly paid, skilled positions are being replaced by low wage service jobs.

There is projected growth in the areas of medical and dental work and certian fields in education (math, special ed.) are almost constantly in demand.

What field do you and your husband work in?
