EDIT: I just got an answer from the school. So sorry to bug you guys - I should have thought to email them in the first place. I guess I did not expect such a fast response, or one at all! mods you can remove this or close it if you wish

Can anyone tell me what curriculum the elem schools use?

If you don't know the name, do you know the publisher?

We are, now, for sure, moving out there next summer and my kids currently use Chicago Everyday Math. Its an odd curriculum and I am not sure how smooth a transition will be to a different one (rising 2nd and 3rd graders). I need to find out what they will be using so I can make sure there are no gaps.

Thanks so much.

The LV schools are a little backward...I think they still use the abacus to do math.

Oh NM is no prize either. sigh!

I wonder if there is someone at CCSD I could email and find out. Hm maybe I will email the principal at the elem school on base. I bet she is used to people coming in from out of state and trying to adapt to different curriculum.

I am sure the Principal will answer your question. She is very interactive with parents. She is outside everyday at the pick up area talking to parents.

Contact the Family Support Center, the base recently hired a liaison to interact with CCSD. He will get answers to all your questions as well.

Our schools here in Las Vegas are more than adequate for children growing up to became valet attendants & card dealers. Higher education is available for those kids planning on careers in hotel management.

For all the rest, we offer a good selection of trade schools such as slot machine repairman, plumber, computers and so on.

I don't know what curriculum they use, but my 4th grader's teacher hates it and so do I, and we're constantly working twice as hard to get across key ideas.

The order in which concepts are taught, and the sometimes nonsensical wording of the math problems, make it harder than it really should be to learn basic concepts.

Actual question from a CCSD math test:

Q: Johnny deals blackjack at the Bellagio. A whale places a stack of 20 pink chips on the table and asks for an equal number of black and green chips. How many chips of each color does the whale get in return?

Not solvable as stated. I would note however that such problems can be very effective at teaching concepts

I still have a fondness for train problems even 50 years later.
