I know I don't post here very often but I do visit the forum quite frequently. I thought I'd share this with the community and hopefully some of you will know more about this.

I just found out that Google is planning to roll out fiber in some areas from 50k people up to 500k but they are looking for communities that want it, and they really want to hear from state, county, city officials.

That's the link and I really hope you take a look at it seeing as here in Vegas we really don't have that many options for Internet besides Cox and Embarq and this would be a great opportunity to get Fiber Internet in the valley.

I like the idea of faster internet, but the reality is that Politics will control what comes.

This: PAXIO delivers the Fastest Residential Internet in the World is probably competitive pricing. At least it is around the silicon valley. Japan is still cheaper.

Thanks! That looks great, but they don't say where they offer service. I sent them a request regardless.

Also on the topic of the Google Fiber Infrastructure, I just sent an email to Mayor Goodman's office so hopefully someone up top is listening and wants Fiber internet just as much XD

Paxio is only available in a (very) small handful of new developments in Silicon Valley. Less than 1% penetration. The rest of us are stuck with SBC DSL or Comcast. Unless you're in a neighborhood where AT&T Uverse is available, you could be looking at as low as 1.5Mbps or less with SBC DSL (I only get 3Mbps due to distance from the CO). Higher speeds are available from Comcast cable, but no better than your average city where cable modem broadband is available. Broadband speeds here suck.

Just got an email back from Paxio and they only serve the San Francisco Bay Area...

Cox highspeed is pretty darn fast. I get about 17mbps! I was actually going to look into downgrading to a slower speed (I'd think 3mbps would be more than sufficient) but didn't see where such an option is offered.

List of cities proper by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tokyo: 17K/km^2
Seoul: 17K/km^2
NYC: 14K/km^2
Hong Kong: 6K/km^2

NYC ain't much less than Tokyo and Seoul and it's twice the density of HK yet residential 50mbps is pretty much a pipe dream in NYC much less the 1Gbps that is cheaply available in those asian cities.

The problems in the US have more to do with regulatory capture of natural monopolies than with population density.
