I'm a Canadian from Toronto who has been offered a consulting job with a US-based company which will require a TN visa. My husband and I plan to relocate to Florida once I accept this job (the job is remote so can be based anywhere in North America and will require travel to clients mainly within the US).
Our long-term goal is to remain in the US and eventually obtain citizenship. I know this will be a long road over many many years, but I want to know if anyone has had experience with this process.
I have been told by some people that once settled in the role and assuming that things go well, after a reasonable amount of time (i.e. a year or so) I could request that my company sponsor me for an H1B visa. From there I could try to qualify for an EB-2 (I have an MBA) and then eventually move on to a green card.
I'm not sure if that path makes sense - looking to some knowledgeable folks on this forum to provide any insights or similar experiences.
There is no path from TN status to U.S. citizenship.
It'll save the company money and time to put you in TN status while they prepare an H1-B application, but there really is no reason from an immigration standpoint to go into TN status before going for U.S. permanent residency. EB-2 is a type of green card application.
Also, if you tell U.S. Customs and Border Protection that your "long-term goal is to remain in the US and eventually obtain citizenship", they will deny your TN status and you will have to turn around and go back home.

First things first. Canadians don't get issued a "TN visa". Only the US Consulates issue visas and none is needed for TN. Only a letter detailing the work, salary and length of time up to 3 years. They get issued work authorization up to 3 years. No path from TN to US green card to citizenship. However, you can keep renewing a TN work authorization in perpetuity as long as you offered employment.
What you can't do is renew the TN status once the I-485 is filed. But the I-140 can be filed while on TN and you can be admitted on TN even after the I-140 is approved.
Collective - that is incredibly helpful. Great information and I will definitely consult with an immigration lawyer on this memo. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi JetSetLady,
Hope you've moved to Florida and having a wonderful time there.
I read your post regarding how to transfer from TN to Green Card. Actually I am in the same boat with you. I am Canadian. I will work for a US company under TN VISA status and eventually I want to be a US citizen.
Just wonderful, did you find any more information on this process you can share with me?
