You've just asked about one of my pet peeves.

How do you define "best" and are you a trick or treater, the parent of trick or treaters, or a doorbell answerer? My neighborhood is VERY popular with trick or treaters, with three schools in walking distance - and that's fine, we doorbell answerers love to see the neighbor kids.

But we also get kids driven in from neighborhoods miles away, who don't attend the nearby schools and have no other connection with the neighborhood (no grandparents or other family members living here, for example), and who often don't bother to dress up - and whose parents and teenage siblings sometimes are there as well, minus costumes but with empty pillowcases themselves.

That's not cool. It's not the kids' fault, but it does come off as greedy.

Residents of one neighborhood cannot and should not be expected to supply Hallowe'en candy to the entire juvenile population of Lexington, much less their parents and teenage brothers and sisters.

Now, if you live in an area which is not safe for children, I can understand. But then, it's probably not safe all the time, not just on Hallowe'en night.

If you live in an area with lots of businesses, or with lots of older residents who no longer answer the door, then why not organize other like-minded families and set up a trunk-or-treat with family cars in a safe parking lot, or organize a Hallowe'en party, or an evening of ghost stories for older kids and adults, or a costume contest - or something which doesn't involve hitting up folks you don't know and are unlikely to ever meet for free candy? Or look for already existing similar activities in the community - they are there and most are free or low-cost. Try churches, community centers, the libraries, etc.

If your area is safe, that's where your kids should trick-or-treat. If Grandma lives across town, fine, go trick-or-treat at her house and introduce yourself as her grandchild to her neighbors. That's fine, too. If your child's best friend lives across town and is having a Hallowe'en night sleep-over (unlikely, it's a school night this year), your child can go with the best friend.

But otherwise - stick to the area which your child can comfortably walk near your own home, or plan an alternative activity. Please don't encourage huge numbers of children to trick or treat in just a few "best" neighborhoods ("best" does not equate with costly houses, btw - many young families with kids live in more modest areas in Lexington). It's not fair to the residents.

So I am not going name any particular neighborhood as best for trick-or-treating. 200+ children in two hours each year on my street is quite enough, thank you.

I'm just the opposite, Craig. I live in a town of a little over 10,000 and, some years, it seems like we have that many kids on Halloween. We live on a well travelled trick or treat route. Giving 2 pieces of candy per bag, or pumpkin, last year I gave out a little over 1000 pieces before I had to turn off the porch light and go in. I don't care where they come from. I do agree some of them should have quit trick or treating 3 or 4 years ago, but love seeing the looks on some of the little kids' faces seeing they have more candy to eat. Bring them on!

Sorry for getting sidetracked, annatree.

Clearly you have never been the resident in one of those “best” trick-or-treat neighborhoods. I don’t live in one right now, but I have. You aren’t expected to just give a small piece of candy to 8-year old Billy from next door but also give candy to the infant in a stroller from a different neighborhood, who shouldn’t be eating chocolate anyway, being pushed by their dressed up mom and dad or a bunch of teenagers who you don’t recognize with a bulging pillowcases and who don’t even bother to dress up.

For three years I literally spent $100-$200 a year on candy and that was over 15 years ago. That is not a small amount of money, particularly for someone on a fixed income. Most of us old folks enjoy seeing our 2-12 year old neighbors dressed up on Halloween, it’s when there are too many that fit in other categories that it gets tiresome. I didn’t really mind it myself, and my husband loves handing out candy and even puts the poor dogs in costumes for the kids to look at, so he wishes we got more kids now days, but I do get her frustration.

Hi there! So we live in a area that's nothing but APARTMENT COMPLEXS!!!! not the best area either! I googled the best areas to take my 3 year old( his first year by the way) trick or treating...and I see THIS RUDE ASS ****!! So yea if you want to be particular in who "gets your candy!" Then shut ur door and go sit back down on ur couch bro! I didn't think the kids nor the parents needed a fkn application to enter ur neighborhood there KAREN! My son said he wanted to "go knock on doors and go tricky tricky!" I'm new to Lex so when I searched and seen this comment,I was just reminded of how people can be...miserable and just mean dude! I hope when my son goes to knock on doors, that it's not in ur neighborhood NOR YOUR FKN DOOR!! Because you will get clowned my friend! NO, were not from YOUR neighborhood and NO we don't live DOWN THE STREET, BUT my son is 3 and he wants to go tricky tricky, AND I need it to be in a SAFE area...so if that's ur fkn door..then you should feel privileged NOT self conceited and stuck up ur own ASS !!
THANK YOU!

My name is Geri Wash BY THE WAY!!!

While this is almost certainly an attempt at 'humor', it's a perfect example of why CraigCreek posted that response. My lights have been off on ToT night for seven or eight years now.
