I have an opportunity at Little Rock AFB. I've been moving around for the military for a few years, not military but for my job. I keep saying I'll stop and go home, or somewhere I know I like...but this is a good opportunity and I am interested. I've never been to little rock and have heard so many conflicting things.

I'm single and 33. I am in San Antonio now so I might like a slower pace, and I might like to live more in the country. My brother lives in Yellville so I even have some family close by.

To be honest I do like bigger cities and am not sure how long I would last in Little Rock or that area...but for some reason I'm interested. Would it be a mistake?

I have read the threads about it being a bad place for young professionals.

It doesn't seem to me like you're asking about neighborhoods, but about whether you should move here at all. Personally I don't think I'd turn to strangers on a forum on a decision about whether to relocate to another city. You say you might like to live more in the country, then you say you like bigger cities and don't know how long you'd last...how can we know if it would be a mistake for you if you're not even sure yourself?

First thing I would do if I were you is visit.

I'm going to try to visit but it's a short turn around/contract position.

I'm not an idiot. I'm asking what it might be like for a single female in little rock and where to live in the area. People can give opinions.

Yes, I have in the past figured I might prefer not neccessarily bigger cities but bigger metros. However, I might like somthing NOW a little more country and that seems possible there as I probably don't have to go to far outside the city to get that.

Sorry for the confusion. It's a pretty open ended question because I want open answers.

I'd recommend Hillcrest. Walkable, with parks and shops and trendy restaurants and bars, and cute little bungalows and apartments with lots of character. Argenta is also nice, but not as established.

A lot of people might recommend West Little Rock, because they think it's "safer" for a single woman than a midtown area like Hillcrest. I'd disagree, but you might prefer a more suburban area. Lots of apartments out there, plus the big box stores, malls, and restaurants both chain and local.

Either way the commute to Jacksonville won't be bad, you'll be going against traffic.

Shoot, you could make the trip on 1 or 2 tanks of gas. I'd come visit. I don't think it'd be a huge culture shock. You know? If you're young, I say go for it. If it's a short turn around/contract position, I don't see the harm in doing it just because you can-especially if it helps your career.

I'm thinking about coming up there this weekend. My interview is on the phone on Monday. Thanks Jenni, I didn't know there was anything like that in the little rock area, sounds nice.

I completly agree with Jenni. I live in the Hillcrest area (just moved from WLR) and work in Sherwood. The commute wouldn't be bad at all. It's even better if you work 9-6 and you dodge the traffic both ways.

Is West Little Rock more suburban? What are rentals like? Is it possible to rent a house for a decent price?

West Little Rock is more suburban, and the further west you go, the newer it gets.

You could probably find an inexpensive 2BR/1BA house in midtown areas like Hillcrest and Capital View, but most houses in WLR are going to be bigger and with higher rent.

Here's the daily paper classifieds, to give you an idea.
