I have read over quite a few of these posts but just want to know if it is realistic for a family of 4 to live in the London area (not in the city) on 70k/year. The goal of moving would be to experience another culture and travel as much as we could (budget concious travel). Is that feasible or are we way off? My husband will need to fly out for an interview soon and I just want to know that it is worth it and we can make this work. Thank you in advance. We would want to live in a safe area. Not sure on exact job location yet.
Housing is very expensive. The overall cost of living is very expensive.
Where are you coming from? As London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, the lifestyle you can have on 70K in, say, Glasgow, isn't the lifestyle you can have for 70K in London. It's one of those situations where the money looks good on paper but you need to weigh it up against the actual cost of living and the lifestyle you can have, versus what you already have.
We are. moving from the US. This is a temporary (2-3 year) move just to experience Europe and see new cultures. I am a physiotherapist and hope I can work too but will have to transfer my license. Sounds like it will be a stretch if I don't work but I appreciate all of the input.

Living in central London is plenty doable on 70k but you won't be living the high life. For instance in Chiswick, west London (safe family area), a nice 3 bed house will cost around £2-2.5k per month. Out of London in somewhere such as High Wycombe the same house would be around half of that.
If you choose somewhere in the London commuter belt then 70k will enable you to live very comfortably.
Try here for an idea of rental costs UK's number one property website for properties for sale and to rent You'll need to add about £300-350 monthly for council tax/utility bills, tv & internet. Most agents will charge a few hundred pounds in fees for setting up the lease and typically 6 weeks rents as deposit.
Thank you so much Stewart. I appreciate the link and information.
