From what I understand from researching both area's -as my husband is a professional working in NYC and we are looking to either stay on LI or move - they both are very similar in terms of their urban vs suburban area's, housing, taxes, income, commute time to NYC. Many people I spoke with moved from NJ to PA b/c there property taxes were getting out of control, similar here on LI. It is just a tough decision to make. NJ and NY are a like in many ways.
I say Long Island because it's fancier here and if you say you're from Long Island, people are impressed. Long Island is known to have many celebrities being brought up here like Lindsey Lohan Ashanti etc.. Plus, our transit system is 1000x better than NJ's transit.
$30,000 - $40,000...good luck, where will you be living? If I like you I will certainly accept you regardless of your salary since i am a nice long islander, however, i won't be lending you any money...times could get tough here on that income i am sorry to say...would you be looking to buy a house?

I'm just "poking" around.
On that salary I know realistically it's more of a "pipe-dream" to purchase any real estate no less than in Long Island.
I'm here in Southeastern Bergen County, NJ and we have people with that type income living their lives. It IS expensive here and don't really seek to stay much longer.
Probably would rent or share if I did move there.
I know it's a long shot at this point of me moving into LI.
Looking at other areas too like Connecticut minus Fairfield County.
What??? You're not wealthy to lend me a few $$$ - lol!!! just kidding!
sorry njguy...having a hard enough time here myself, no money to lend you...I often wonder what is so great about Long Island? I was born and raised here and know nothing else... but I don't think this is such a wonderful place...for a period of time we were looking to move to NH thought we could have a much better, easier life...things just did not work out so we are staying here...it is so expensive and taxes are so high, it is all about what you have...I have an excuse for being here, I have family here and ties here....but someone out of the blue looking to move to Long Island? I wonder why?

wardlwag - I definitely appreciate your candidness in your response about the cost of living in LI.
NJ has the highest Property Taxes in the Nation and I ask myself with the high cost of living that exists here - "How the heck do people do it?"
Not everyone is making the big-bucks College Educated or not.
The only thing that LI would have better than CT is the public transportation system in case I wanted to be conservative and not drive.
I want to try to simplify my life, not complicate it more.
Thanks so much again for your reply.
