If you want a job that nearly doubles in salary in 5 years and tops at $109,000 with multiple sick/vacation time, full pension and health benefits and plenty of OT available, you really need to take the SCPD exam.

If you are unemployed, The $100 test is FREE.

I wonder what they ask you on this exam.....

1. You see a woman get punched in the stomach, what do you do?
a) Run away
b) Walk away quietly
c) Attack woman who got punched
d) None of the above

2. You took a wrong turn, what do you do?
a) Make an illegal U-turn
b) Scream for help
c) Light your car on fire and run away
d) None of the above

Answer:
1) If good looking, obtain her phone number and address - ask her out on a date. Part II - arrest assailant, jab nightstick into assailant's stomach region to make good impression on date.

2) Throw on the lights and siren, make a turn across 3 lanes of traffic and proceed to your destination. Part II - If on duty, charge overtime for extra effort involved in manuevering county property in a safe and efficient manner.

"More than 30,700 applicants have signed up to take the the new Suffolk County police civil service test June 11th,
even though applicants will have only a 1-in-150 chance of being hired."

Aren't those odds about the same as hitting Powerball?

The 1 in 150 is not all that accurate, IMO. Military vets get a 10 point upgrade (Rightly, IMO) and minorities get a point advantage as well (Fact).
This, coupled with the fact that the overwhelming majority of SCPD hires come from the NYPD suggests your chances are much less than 1 in 150.
Once the lawsuits start, the test results will be null and void anyway.

Not sure what you are talking about. This thread is not for discussing salaries.

maybe its just me, but I have a serious problem with any public position that recieves 30,000 applicants since this is paid for by the people.

either
A) the qualifications for the job are set too low and a lot of unqualified people are "applying"
B) the salary and benefits are too high for the required skill set.

or both.

think about your job for a moment.... are there 30,000 people in this area that are fighting over it?

The people working for me probably would want my job. I tell anyone else about my job and they look at me like I have three heads and ask me why I'm still working here.

Applicants != positions.

A million people can apply but if they only take a certain #, it just widens the pool for more qualified individuals.
