We purchased a house but haven't moved in yet. The neighbor stops to tell me that he digs a path between his property and onto mine to make it easy for the mailman to deliver our mail because he sympathizes for them in this weather. He says he doesn't use our property or our driveway so we shouldn't worry except he sneaks his garbage cans onto the road that way. I didn't know what to say so I didn't say anything but after thinking about it for a little bit, it bothers me. Why is he digging a path to "make it easier for the mailman" but our driveway isn't getting cleared until we get to it so how is that making it easier for him to deliver our mail. I think it's for the convenience of the garbage. I don't want him bringing them back and forth if I have cars parked out there. What should I do? Should I just let it go for now and not make waves with the new neighbors for now? Should I say something? Maybe wait until i move in....... Should I consider putting a fence up?

There is a lot of truth to the old saying "Good fences make good neighbors"

That's all you need to know

What he most likely means is for the mailman to cut from his house to your house. They don't always walk up driveways in this weather, a lot of mailmen cut across your lawn. A fence in the front will look ghetto. I would leave it be, you could have much worse neighbors, be grateful.

I know what you mean, when I moved into the house I now live in, my neighbor told me that I had to mow/weed whack this small piece of town property at the end of our driveways because SHE couldn't see coming out of her driveway. The first summer in the house, we were hardly home or had the time to worry about it. She did mention it a couple of times. So the next summer, my hubby put weed killer on it..problem solved! Put a fence up!!! They do make for good neighbors!

I would wait until I move in to see what he does. But I would not be ok with him walking on my property.
