I'm not Jewish (I'm Catholic) but about 1/2 the parents in my son's playgroup are Jewish (either secular or reform). Port Washington isn't totally Jewish like Great Neck, but believe me it's still a significant percentage of the population here and that percentage seems pretty stable.
If you mean that Jews are being replaced by Asians like in Searingtown, Jericho, Syosset, etc, I would say no that isn't the case in Port Washington.
The OP was asking about separate but equal it seems.
He wants a Jewish-specific area, rather than mixed.
Why not check the local synagogues/temples in these areas and ask? I would think that would be the first place to start ;)
Long Island Synagogues, Temples, Shuls provides a listing, by denomination, of most, if not all, synagogues, temples and shuls in Nassau and Suffolk County.
Jericho used to be, but now on the decline, the Jewish community of Jericho is shrinking pretty fast and causing some synagogues to consider closure and merge with others in the area.
Is that more because the Jewish population is declining or more because the Jewish population that are members of a synagogue is declining?
I dont know whats happened to the Reform Jews of Great Neck, who were mighty in numbers when I grew up and belonged to the National Federation of Temple Youth. I expect to be visiting the Conservative shul in GN next week - afaik that is still a vibrant community.
My wife and I are looking to move to LI from Manhattan. We are reform/conservative and looking for good area. Great Neck and 5 towns are probably too religious for us. Roslyn is too expensive and we don't want South shore. What about Port Washington, Jericho area or Commack? Can anyone help us?
I thought PW was as expensive as Roslyn? You also stated a "good area" Does that mean a predominantly non-observant Jewish area? If so Jericho, Commack, Syosset all are. Then again, don't restrict yourself too much. In many places on and near the North shore, including Huntington and Greenlawn, you won't be much of a minority if you're non-observant.
