I am truly sorry that you did not write this post in January as I could have provided you with college level science and some neuroscience internships in the area with either a stipend or a salary. Most of them had a March 1st deadline and the selections were made in April. The most well-known are Cold Spring Harbor and Brookhaven. These are great internship opportunities. If you are interested in pre-med, you should try area hospitals and I hope that you already spent some time shadowing a doctor for no pay. There were some unpaid Nassau county government offices internships still available during the beginning of May, but I don't know if these have been taken and they were not science related.

Do you have a science writing background? But again, this internship that I have in mind does not have a salary.

Next time, start your search RIGHT after New Year's Day. Many internships have application deadlines in Feb. and March and it takes time to get letters of recommendation and other materials needed for the application.

Another suggestion is to try to see if there are any openings for counselors at the summer camps. I have to agree that the town pool/park jobs are hard to get without a connection and by this time, they would all be taken. Next year, start looking for a summer job earlier, before your spring semester is over even if your college is not local.

There are some companies here on LI that have internships, OSI (was taken over by company no sure of the name now), some companies in Manhattan but most start in June, so as awas said already you are late in the game. Merck, inc is a great company and has some rolling internships but they are in NJ, no harm putting in an application.

There might be some jobs at the beach clubs in Atlantic Beach, ABC Club, Sun & Surf, Silver Point but you need to get an application is ASAP. Late in the game again but they do have some drop outs.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response! I do definitely realize I am late in the game but I got completely wrapped up in my academics this semester. I was only able to apply to a few summer research positions for this summer (including CSHL) and was rejected to all of them. It was really discouraging, but I have had several advisors tell me that I am not competitive without prior research experience.

I definitely agree with everyone about how valuable internships are because of how competitive it will be (I know first hand as it was cutthroat to get into more selective colleges so I am nauseated at how hard the job market will be)! I was able to be accepted to two internships last summer: one I shadowed physicians in the ER and the other I shadowed in the OR. I hope to do some more shadowing and I am DEFINITELY interested in other non-paid internships (outside of medicine as well), but I don't think that I can afford another summer without some sort of income on the side. My parents tell me to only worry about getting good grades but I feel so awful relying on them for spending money on top of everything else they already pay for because I am perfectly able to work. We're not wealthy by any means, so it just makes me feel terribly guilty.

I am a custodian in a school and I was just going to suggest this idea when I saw your post. It is very hard work but a great job for college kids. Apply to all your local schools.

Some school districts have summer rec programs. Try calling local districts. The Boys and Girls Clubs hire for the summer.

Lots of suggestions have been made and you've covered a lot of ground, too.
Best of luck.

Here's a suggestion unrelated to your career training:

If you don't mind "working" on weekends and/or at night, how about some babysitting jobs in your neighborhood? The pay is usually around $12-$15/hr depending on ages/number of children. Should definitely give you some spending money! You can ask your local librarian if you can post your info; also, some of the smaller post offices have bulletin boards.
You can even babysit while holding another job if you coordinate the hours...

I was going to suggest babysitting. I belong to a large Mom's group and the consensus seems to be 8-10 for a high school kid, 10-12 for a college kid and $10-15 for an adult sitter. Good luck!

Hotel in Fire Island, NY is looking for college students for housekeeping. This is a live in job, you wouldn't have to commute. Great job to save money for school, pay plus tips, and right on the beach. If interested please call: [mod] phone number removed. Have people DM you instead. [/mod]

Summer camps always need people especially last minute for specialties like dance or art. If you are skilled in something it's an easy summer gig.

Also BOCES has a summer program. You dont need to be majoring in education.
