Not sure what you mean by clean, but you should remove all standing water in the yard in containers, etc. Beyond that, chemical solutions may be worse than the cure.

If you have a problem with mosquitoes indoors, try either burning lavender scented incense or candles...they're repelled by the smell.

Interesting...I never heard of these before. They use regular lighter fluid?

You have to buy refill kits - it's a butane cartridge (which you may be able to refill, not sure) and a little pad. The butane powers a small pilot light that heats up the pad, giving off the repellent. You can leave the device on the table and it creates a radius of protection, or clip it to your belt and carry it around with you. Lasts quite a few hours between refills and of course you can turn it on and off and use it again another day.

Beats spraying yourself and your kids with chemicals, although it doesn't work for ticks etc.

The best app-liable repellent Ive used is straight lemon oil (or grapefruit oil) but I might try one of these when we have people over. Thanks!

Consumer Reports and other groups have run these kinds of tests - the only things that are proven to work reliably are DEET and permathrin-based sprays/lotions.

Aalthough they didn't test Thermacells when I read the results a few years ago, consensus seems to agree with my personal assessment that they work as well. Again, though, only for mosquitos and certain flies. If you're in the woods or something you still need DEET/permathrin for ticks.
