For me on Long Island has to Be;
1. Rare 650
2. Paces
3. 21 Main
4. Luso( Even though not a steak house,but there Rib Eye is amazing!!!! )
5.Tellers

I like these places because they are more LI born houses instead of coming from the city like "Lugers" for instance....

These are my top five favorites.
I miss Pace's. The marinated NY strip was the best!

IMO there is nothing wrong with J&Rs steakhouse. If you like to waste money go to Paces, far more expensive for about the same quality as JRs. I've eated in all the JRs, I like Stony Brook and Calverton the best, Rocky Point the worst. The service there was terrible both times I went.

Someone took me once to Vintage in St James, it was very good, but waay overpriced.

Not strictly a steak house but I had just a wonderful filet this weekend at Black & Blue in Huntington.

IMO you cannot compare the steaks at J&R's to any of the expensive steakhouses here on LI or anywhere else. J&R's has good burgers but that's about it. If you think going to paces or any other popular steak house is money wasted then you don't know good food or steak for that matter. JMO don't mean to knock your preference for J&R's.I do hear that the Elbow room out east has a good steak. I have to get there someday. I have never been to paces but have been to Tellers, Lugers, Rothman's, Mortons,21 Main steakhouse, Schula's steakhouse, and Ben Bensons. All very good. I have heard mixed reviews about the steaks from J&R's,but if I am going to go out to eat for steak than I'd rather go to the places I mentioned above. just my preference. I had a great Skirt steak at the Lake Grove diner. I was surprised about how juicy and tender the steak was. If you like skirt steak and don't want to spend alot of $$$ then try Lake grove diner's.

Don't be a steak snob there, Lubby.

JR is the blue collar of steakhouses. It's a cheaply priced steak but they do a decent job at it. It's not fine aged prime..perhaps its the upper end of choice at best. However, for people that can't afford lugers, paces etc...its not a bad meal.

Gotta agree with Gpsma. When I want a decent, well priced steak I will hit up J & R's. The difference in cost compared to quality of the big price steak houses just isn't worth it.

Sorry about being a steak snob, I just can't help myself sometimes. I did not mean to offend anyone.
