Cablevision and setting up internet in apartment? (purchase, landlords)

Hi...I just moved to an apartment on the landlord's second floor. There she gave me a cable box and I'm able to use her account to get all the channels she does. Cable is included in the rent. The tricky part is the internet. The landlord has a modem and a router, but there seems to be no way to stick another router on the modem so I can have my own connection under their account. They don't want me having their router password. What are my options for setting this up with cablevision? Would I have to purchase my own modem, but how would that work if it's under my landlord's name? Because I use their cable, i'm not sure I can do it myself.

No, you can't run another cable to the modem.

You can run another cable to their router if they have an open port. Usually there are 4 on the router.

But, you need someone to set up their router to accomodate your computer or even another router if you need it.

Perhaps their router has wireless access. Most routers have guest accounts available.

None of this requires that you ever know your landlords password. The person setting up the computers/routers does need to know the password.

It can be setup very quicly by someone that knows what they are doing.

If not the landlord, someone they trust.

They can always change their password when the setup is finished which, again, has nothing to do with you getting on-line.

If you get your own router, and connect it's Internet port to a port on THEIR router, it should work. The one thing you MIGHT need to do is change the internal network address on YOUR router to something besides 192.168.1.x

I won't get into the technical aspects, but your router will "see" their router as an Internet provider. And, it shouldn't require any passwords or setup on their end.

If you were willing to pay for it, you COULD ask them to have CV give them another cable modem, but that would probably be pricey...
