There is a strong job prospect for me in LI, in about 2 weeks or so. I am not sure what's best since I've never been to LI: Commute there from say.. Newark, NJ or any part thereof or actually live in LI? I actually live in Pittsburgh, PA so I am open to any section in NJ or LI that would make me report to my job within a reasonable time and have time to socialize, work out, etc at the end of my work day.
I don't wish to commute longer than 30 minutes (considering traffic) and I don't wish to spend 2/3 of my paycheck on rent. Absolute Max: $1100
What would you do if you got a job in LI and have to choose between commuting or living in LI?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Forget living in NJ if you only want to commute 30 minutes or less. It will never happen for someone working on LI and living in NJ.
Tell us WHERE on LI the job is located and we can give you suggestions on where to live for the best commute.
For your stated maximum rent, please note you will only get a studio or 1 bedroom for that rent. If that's fine with you, this may work out.
The work site is in Long Island City, NY. 46th Avenue and 21st Street. Since job will issue a geographical pay difference I believe my max rent is going to be: $1400 (give or take $100). I do not wish to live in a studio or substandard area.

That's a neighborhood in the northwest part of the New York City Borough of Queens, and while Kings County and Queens County (coterminous with the New York City Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively) are the western part of the geographic Long Island, colloquially Long Island only includes Nassau County and Suffolk County.
lucuma, bear in mind that, in addition to the New York State income tax, there is a New York City income tax.
Good point Walter! lots of people who move to NYC area have no clue that they have to pay a tax to the city even if they live in the burbs (Jersey, Nassau, suffolk)
It should be in every post: You are moving to NYC for a job? remember, the city will be your 3rd income tax to file!
