We just moved into our first house, family of 4-2 adults, 2 kids, the house has two full bathrooms, dishwasher and washer/dryer, hot water baseboard heat and in-ground sprinklers. The typical use is everyone takes a shower once a day, dishwasher is run every other day, washer is run every two weeks with about 4-5 loads, it's top-loader. I got a bill for the first full month (actually 29 days) and it's 65 bucks for 14,100 gallons. I am not questioning the rate, but this works out to be 486 gallons per day. Can it really be that much? Everyone says that water is like the cheapest utility, so this seems to be on a high side.

Where are you located on LI and what water company do you have?
Maybe the old owner of the house didn't pay their last bill and the company just added it onto the new account at that address?
Or is there something wrong with their meter?
Or maybe they don't have one of the local water utilities, but have an off brand like American Water (who probably buys the water from the local utilities and then jacks up the price to the customer)? I have gotten solicitations in the mail to switch to American Water. I don't trust them.
I have also gotten solicitations to switch to other "electric utilities" than LIPA, but I don't trust them either as I have heard of shadiness going on.
Hmmm.. $65 for 14,000 gal. & $62 for 31,000 gals. Somethings off here.
we'd need to verify what water district and also since it's her first bill, there may be an offsetting adjustment the next go around... first bills are seldom correct...
or it may have included a fee for starting service with the water district...
This is not the first bill, it's the first bill for the whole month. We turned the service on Aug 14 and the first bill was through Sept 8th, it was 8,000 gallons and the total was $38.62. I was kind of expecting somewhere around 40-45 bucks per month. We are in Oceanside, and we use Long Island American Water as our provides-is there anyone else out there we can use? I did not think there was another choice.
So glad I'm in the South Huntington Water District (had them in CSH as well) I have found Suffolk County Water Authority to be the highest, at least in Suffolk (had them in Babylon).
Currently I have sprinklers (6 zones - 17 sprinklerheads), don't do too much wash though (just me), but a year's worth of charges is well under $100...
