And yesterday Cornell got $350 mil from anonymous individual donor.
This is the largest donation in Cornell's history.
It makes me think that there are not a negligible number of individuals who have money to unload.
The money will be used towards their plan for building a new campus in NYC with a high-tech focus. This is a $2 billion project, with strong support from the city that will provide the real estate and infrastructure. The proposed site is Roosevelt Island.

Other competitors for this project are/were Columbia, Carnegie-Melon and Stanford (yeah, go figure - for the latter 2!).
Currently, Cornell has a dysfunctional relationship between its 2 existing campuses - in Ithaca and in Manhattan. But I guess, it's all business and the proximity of campuses does not matter that much...
It's certainly more expensive to support multiple locations - SBU had to close the South Hampton campus, but we are keeping a small Manhattan one (it's expensive)...
