Well as I was purchasing soda and a bag of chips , from a local long island establishment. I proceeded too pay with quarters , dimes and 16 cents in penny's. I was informed in no certain terms. Penny's will not be accepted over 5 cents. Is this allowable ? Is this good business ? Is this just a long island issue. I paid with penny's in other places. Should this be considered a form of discrimination? What about the elderly with their change purses?
"Title 31 (Money and Finance), Subtitle IV (Money), Chapter 51 (Coins and Currency), Subchapter I (Monetary System), Section 5103 (Legal Tender) of the United States Code states:
'United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues. Foreign gold or silver coins are not legal tender for debts.'"
"What this statute means, in the words of the United States Treasury, is that '[A]ll United States money . . . is a valid and legal offer [that's the key word here - Aron R] of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal law mandating that a person or organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services.'"
Turns out they can do whatever they want, no one, other than the Federal government needs to accept your money.
Another enlightening thread. If they don't take pennies, don't shop there. If it hurts their business they'll change their mind. If it doesn't, they'll do what they want. Kind of a pain to roll and shlep pennies to the bank these days. Not worth the labor time for a small store. Give it 10 years and many won't take cash at all, except to dodge taxes. Capitalism. The American way.
go use them at a place where the employees couldn't care less... like a fast food place or big box store. People always say to support your local businesses but they are always more restrictive (return policies, etc.)

In light of such a small purchase and considering I had enough too pay. If I would have used my credit or debit card for this amount, I would have been hit with an additional fee.The disgust on the cashiers face when I was removing my change should have told me what too expect.

The credit card surcharges (merchant fees) are paid by the store. Some stores have a $10 minimum because of that so you wouldn't be allowed to use a CC anyway (another mom & pop store negative). Not sure about debit cards, didn't think there were any restrictions/fees on your side.

Another enlighting thread says it all, first the put down then the words of wisdom. p.s they have these coin machines in the banks now days. You just dump in your coins all at once. no rolling or counting. or oye vay, shleping. can you get me a salt with a schmear on your way?

Another brilliant hypothesis. I know you have a physical need to attack me but try to think your own thoughts through. If they have "coin machines" at the bank, why is the "enlightening thread" an issue at all?! The OP should just go trade in his pennies for reasonable currency. If the store owner doesn't want to schlep Schlep - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary pennies to the bank and stand on TWO lines to make his deposit, that's his business. Then again, what does a business accepting pennies have to do with Long Island?! I like that the OP says "from a Long Island establishment."
Frankly if it were my business I'd take all the coins in the world. Anybody in retail passing up a sale over pennies is dumb and should ultimately go out of business. My deli doesn't take pennies but they round everything down in the customer's favor. Works for them. EZ peezy. God bless America.
