Yesterday I noticed that the house number painted on my curb had been blacked out. Is that an ominous sign like in Breaking Bad? I'm 99% sure that we paid the nonprofit/VFW/American Legion or whoever does the curb painting this year like we do every year, but if we didn't, would they black it out?

the volunteer fire dept. goes around and blacks out the houses that don't donate to the beer pool, so you forgot them.
seriously, they paint the background black and it needs to dry before they paint the white numbers over it.
They black them out every year and then repaint them in front of every house. They then stop by a few days later to ask for a donation. NO they don't repaint it black if you don't donate.

I suggest that whatever town you reside in, (or village) that you call the town hall and ask who paints the house numbers on the curb? If they don't know I would inquire of the fire dept, next. I am certain the numbers are not being painted under cover of darkness and someone will know who is doing the painting and the reason for it. It could even be kids blacking it out,
In Levittown we went through the same thing. Dumbest thing I ever heard. After I stenciled a yellow butterfly over the number we never heard from them again.
