It is interesting that in the cost cutting plan the MTA touts, there is no mention of staff reductions/givebacks/concessions, etc. I am not saying that I would want anyone to ever be laid off, but it looks like that is not an option at the MTA. The chairman of the MTA a few months ago said layoffs are not an option. Such is life with unions I guess.
Also to be determined is what will the impact be of the possible loss of the MTA payroll mobility tax which has been ruled unconstitutional and if it holds up, the MTA would have to refund that money.
LIRR folks often also need to take the subway, so while the LIRR will rise 9%, the cost of a metrocard will be rising as well so it is a double whammy. The cheapest option (zone 4) plus a monthly unlimited metrocard will now cost between $355-$370 depending on what they do will the metrocard fares. And the pre-tax transit benefit is only $125.

Blame your US Senators and House Reps for putting the transit pre tax back at $125, while the parking pre tax went UP. Hello???
Some is union , most is Albany which raids the MTA's budget same with the gas tax for pet projects....and no one seems to care about this.... The MTA has given the areas that wanted more service more service , Long Island doesn't seem to want or push more service so they don't get it or don't get the full package along with expansions. In other news New Jersey , Connecticut , and PA will not see a hike till 2015...

According to the plan, we (LIRR) will have another fare hike in 2015
When fewer people use the LIRR because of the expense, will they again raise the rate to make up for the shortfall in revenue?
Depends , the LIRR just like MNRR could exploit there Urban areas for Ridership which would double the ridership and revenue but they don't for some reason. Theres an Estimated 400,000 who would use both system if the Fare was lowered to 3.50 and service was increased...some of these areas are the poorest in the region yet both systems bypass them or have limited service... Theres estimated 100,000 who will use the MNRR Penn Station expansion...tap into these other areas to expand Ridership....it isn't that hard... NJT did it , Ridership grew by 120,000 , SEPTA did it , MBTA is doing it...

You still have Penn Station considerations.
