Everybody on this forum is too obsessed with being close to the grimey city/too broke too care about/afford Montauk or any of the Hamptons for that matter. Montauk is beautiful, you should consider yourself lucky to even be able to consider living there.
Montauk is gorgeous, but in the winter it's pretty dead. It's also (obviously) a brutal commute if you work anywhere outside of the South Fork, and I think your shopping options are pretty limited. I guess the main question is what you're looking for - if you're looking for quiet winters, easy beach access, and natural beauty, it's a great place. If you're looking for a more traditionally "suburban" experience, go west.
We spend our summers out east. If you have a job that allows you to work from there or somewhere near then it is a start. Beware that after new year through March, it is beyond dead. One can only go to explore the south and north fork, shelter island and cross sound to connecticut so many times. If you enjoy that, great then you will be fine. There are some avid surfers in the dead of winter on Montauk. I don't get it because i don't surf. If you surf, then this is heaven. If you can figure out how to work and enjoy leisurely activities 365 then you will love it. If you are a city person like me, you will poke out your eyeballs Jan-March. Summer is gorgeous and fall and spring is very nice. Cant go wrong then. best wishes and good luck!
what's a one bdrm apt go for during the winter months out there?
i'd be a pretty happy camper if i could spend a winter in montauk.
