Wow, what a thread... or what this thread had become!
I grew up out here and when I think back to my summers as a teen and even in my early 20's, LI had so much more to offer. Although there was a ton of development back then, it's nothing like it is now.
I agree with those who believe there's a whole wide country out there, where it costs a hell of lot less to live and where there's more to recreation than hitting the mall to spend whatever is left from the property tax bill.
The one disconcerting factor about the future here is how all of the municipalities and many school districts are crying poverty. I look at my present property tax bill and can't believe the county, the town and the school district have no money. Which means tax increases... big, dirty property tax increases.
I absolutely agree with Peconic... Life is too short to live in a place that you don't at least enjoy somewhat.

You forgot to mention the part about the LIRR sucking.
I think its safe to say that if you are into shooting guns freely, racing your 4x4 truck, making open fires and camping in the woods then Long Island is not for you anymore.
I enjoy all those things except the racing. But those things alone doesn't keep me from leaving.
Okay, people! Race you to Americus, Georgia so we can TOTALLY ruin it for him! (J/K, relax!)
Great catch!! I have some friends down there and I am going to start mobilizing them so they can begin clamping down on guns and racetracks right away!

Also have them lobby for "No Dogs Allowed" ... ANYWHERE!
