Some potentially rare good news regarding taxes...Increased child tax credits and the return of the STAR rebate checks. This could take the sting out of the recent 10% school tax increase many of us in Nassau just got hit with. Skelos and Senate GOP are looking to give middle-class residents a tax break.
Quote:
Under the GOP proposal, the maximum child tax credit would be raised from $330 to $375 and provide an additional $500 child tax credit per family.
The Family Tax Relief Act would also restore the New York State School Tax Relief Program, or STAR, property tax rebate checks that were eliminated in 2009. A restoration of this program would provide approximately $1.3 billion in tax relief to families and seniors, according to Senate Republicans.
Childless with no STAR (couldn't qualify)- any tax breaks in the works for childless po' working stiffs like me?
My husband and I do not qualify for the child credit either. We go get STAR though. Sucks how we are paying up through the nose to live here and we dont have any kids in the schools.
I am confused. Doesn't the STAR rebate usually just get deducted from our taxes that we pay? Is this something different?
The reduction of your RE taxes is via the STAR exemption. The rebate is via check and the amount varies (it's also not nearly as much as the exemption).

So how do you find out if you qualify to receive this rebate?
