With all that's in the news lately, regarding the illegal apartments in Stony Brook, I started wondering about a local house which was built several years ago. When people moved in, I assumed they were a typical type family that one would expect to move into a nice newly built home. Eight years later the lawn is still dirt, no bushes, no fence... Nothing. Many cars on driveway, and an obvious basement apartment. Someone up the block clued me in and told me its a rental. I was also told that the owner rents out another house on the road as well.

Are people allowed to rent out there homes without permits? Or is it only having multiple families in a structure that requires a permit?

I searched at the link below for Brookhaven rental permits and the house in question is not listed as having a permit. Accessory Apartment - House Rental Search

Should I notify the town?

Ha. Careful Corky or you may be getting a visit from a town inspector. I am sure they could find something that isn't to code.

This is exactly the type of thing we are trying to correct. Please report this to the Town's legal department. Ask your neighbors to do the same. All of us in Brookhaven have to fight back.

Perhaps Islip sends out inspectors in retribution for a homeowner filing a justified complaint? I've filed complaints in Brookhaven without issue.

If someone is trying to do the right thing, why put a question of doubt in their mind?

Can one report as anonymous?
Also, if its a family renting the house and has a renter in the basement, then a permit is required, right? But if its just one family, then it's okay, no permit needed? Not sure how the law works.

ANY rental needs a permit in brookhaven. The town supervisor is recommending changing the laws so that a permit is needed every year instead of every 2 years and the fine raised to $5k

A permit is required for an accessory apartment.

You have to include your name on the complaint form. Think about all the baseless, nonsense complaints which would be filed if there were no accountability. The town will not release your name should the other party ask the inspector.
