see below. Also, since I've been here (14 years) the street signs has been mounted on a telephone pole so it was on no one's curb. Now all of a sudden, they changed it.
One thing that happened was that the utility that owns the pole the signs had been on previously likely started to complain. The pole owners, usually electric companies, have started to really clamp down the last few years on signs placed on their equipment.
I had the same thing happen in Stony Brook. They put a road sign in our front yard - never notified us - but they put it 20 feet too far in from the southern boundary of our yard, which made the sign stick out like a sore thumb, so I picked up the phone and convinced the town to move the sign to the northern boundary line between us and our neighbor, which took the sign away from being directly in our front yard, and now it's in a much less obtrusive spot. It's not in the neighbors yard either.
The town said that their computer said to put the road sign on our property. There was no fighting that, but there were two choices as to where the sign would be placed.
Right, that's the issue. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
I like what you said and when I speak to them again, I'll see if there is an alternative placement, if they cannot put it back on the telephone pole as it has been since I've lived here.

The rule of thumb is 15' is goverment property, that means the town/goverment can use that property for the public good. Utility poles, traffic signs, underground utilities, sidewalks can all be placed in this strip. Your current situation shows the disadvantage of a corner lot, but you have the pleasure of maintaining the property.
I am afraid you have no recourse to get it removed.

Who's rule of thumb is that? It depends on your town and your zoning plus easement rights.
I would hope you checked into what the easement distance is first. Complaining could causes the town to check your property to make sure you haven't done anything illegal in those easements.
I'm pretty sure there are some hefty penalties associated with removing street signs... I really don't think it would be worth it (unless you're the adventurous type)
What kind of sign is it anyway? You know you can be charged with manslaughter if there is a car accident leading to a death caused by a removed stop sign?
