Holy toledo, people!! Left the house with beautiful pin straight hair and arrived at the train with a giant frizzball. I love the fall because it means I start looking pretty again.

But, even though it hasnt been as hot on the whole as other summers, is it just me or the humidity worse this year than it has been in a while?

Are you living on the same island as some other people? They've been singing the praises of the beautiful, perfect, non-humid weather on LI this summer!

In all seriousness, you live on an island. That's certainly going to contribute to a lot of moisture being in the air.

Plus I just checked the weather for LI and it's raining in the area. That'll usually do it.

Down here, it's just like you described - not nearly as hot as usual but way more humid overall.

Good luck with the hair. I feel your pain.

It's an island. Humidity MUCH less this year than most. Rain way below monthly average.

In California , though, even coastal places such as Monterey and islands such as Sausilito are not humid. I guess it's an East coast thing , the Japanese Current or something?

I think it's the jet stream, brings the warm water and moist airmass up from the gulf. It's plenty humid here and I'm nowhere near any water. But that airmass moves up here and it's just gross.

It's something I've noticed coming back from many different parts of the country and overseas...LI is very humid in the summer, as humid as anywhere on the east coast including Florida. The relative warmth of the Atlantic makes it much more humid than areas along the West Coast.

It's also very wet in NY, which people don't realize. If you're bored by numbers, look elsewhere.

We get more precipitation in terms of volume than a place like Seattle..which people seem to think is perpetually soaked. Those big thunderstorms we get put out a lot more rain than the drizzle in Seattle. Look at the average montly precipitation totals..NY gets more rain in every season except the winter. In the summer, the difference is huge. July, NYC averages 4.6 inches of rain...Seattle less than an inch. The northeast forests are a darker shade of green compared to anywhere I've ever seen short of a rainforest. When you travel to places like England and Ireland, it's green but a lighter shade.

Of course, the thing most people notice about Seattle is how cloudy it is, and they get 500 less hours of sunshine per year than NY.

Yep. We had one week in the beginning of summer where it rained non stop all week and since then we've gotten hardly anything. My lawn is begging for some consistent rain.

NY is affected by the gulf stream, warm water from the south.

California is affected by current that flows down from Alaska...cold water.

The water at Southern California beaches is colder than NY in the middle of the summer. The water temperature at the pier in Santa Monica is lower than Montauk Point right now, I just looked it up. And the breeze in Socal blows in from the ocean..so it's constantly cool, ie "built in air conditioning". The water up near San Fran is really cold all year round.

Nobody moves to NY because of weather, where as many move to Socal for it.
