Why is Nassau so expensive? (Hicksville, Merrick: real estate, houses, neighborhoods)

I went to this deli in Great Neck, and the prices were Manhattan-esque. A bottle of cherry cola that goes between $1.25-1.75 in my Queens cost $2.72 in Great Neck! I also went to some diner around Marcus Avenue, and you could tell the diner was trying to do its best East Village impersonation because a simple rap cost almost ten dollars. Long Island Lutheran High School is also as expensive as a school you might find in Upper East Side or Park Slope. And don't even get me started on Roosevelt Field prices lol

How can you guys afford to live here? The prices are simply staggering

I moved to LI from Forest Hills less than a year ago and I actually find the cost of living here to more palatable. I guess it depends on where you frequent. Great Neck probably thinks it's the Upper East Side or Park Slope.

A few years ago, I went to a wedding in the Orlando area. My husband and I have friends that work for Disney who got us in for free. We met up with them for dinner after spending the day in the park, and we started telling them how "reasonable" the prices in the park were -- not cheap, but we didn't feel gouged. Our friends looked at us like we were insane. Then they realized that we're used to Manhattan prices.

B/c Great Neck is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Nassau.

I feel the same after going to places like London or Tokyo....manhattan would seem cheap by comparison....heck I remember Oahu cost more than Manhattan. I recall paying about $5 per liter of gasoline in asia .....everything is relative

To be fair, Forest Hills is probably the most expensive neighborhood in Queens. I try not to go to the delis in Forest Hills for this exact reason.

Just don't go to expensive area in Nassau. Such as Great Neck, Port Washington etc. The place real estates is high the price is higher as they pay higher rent.
I went to one of the restaurant in Hicksville it was much cheeper than Manhattan.
Not every Nassau is expensive.

Movie tickets, Starbucks, fast food are all more expensive in Manhattan than in Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau County (including Great Neck).

I am moving from Merrick LI after 40+ years. I am a librarian, my husband an accountant. My home is modest compared to the North Shore. My taxes are $16K+. The house is unimproved compared to other houses on the block. They pay $20K in taxes. Other expenses bring the cost of living in Merrick to the same amount of the taxes. Do the math, aprox. $35K. I will miss everyone and everything.

I went to a butcher shop in Great Neck, and their steaks were way more expensive then even the fanciest of brooklyn/manhattans butcher shops. I'm assuming it costs more because its Kosher.
