Oceanside - what's going on?
I've been hearing things around town and seen a few posts on this forum about Oceanside "not being what it used to" and how the schools "used to be good but are worsening". I graduated from OHS (in the 80's) and was pretty happy there. I know all things and times change, but has anyone heard anything factual? Heard rumors of bad drug problems in the school. True? False? No more than any other suburb's problems?

For those who may not be familiar with Oceanside:
Oceanside is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the south part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oceanside in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the east by the Hamlet of Baldwin and the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor; on the south by the Hamlet of Barnum Island; and, on the west by the Village of Hewlett Bay Park and the Village of East Rockaway.
The Hamlet of Oceanside has a different border than does the "Oceanside, NY 11572" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and a place can be in the Hamlet of Oceanside and have other than an "Oceanside, NY 11572" mailing address): some places in the Hamlet of Oceanside that have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

It's not really that different. A few things have changed, but the changes are no different from that of other neighboring villages. Crime is somewhat higher (when compared to the 70's/80's), but still very low. Gangs are attempting to rear the ugly head as they have been in all of southwest nassau and while they do exist, they are not the hardcore members and the situation is under control. Drugs and alcohol are common, but let's be realistic, they always were and are everywhere. The schools are still excellent. The only place to stay away from is Tilrose, but from what I've heard the police are patrolling the street better now.

thf415......I agree with your post 100%.....we have lived in Oceanside for the past 28 years, and have seen some changes (like most neighborhoods )
It still is a very good place to raise a family. My children and now my grandson have gone through the Oceanside school system. My grandson is now in the high school and although things have changed somewhat, it is still a very good school compared to many. Lots of things that have happened here, were the result of outsiders coming into the neighborhood. I love the town and the close proxsemity to the city.

I have lived in Oceanside for over 40 years. I am a graduate of the Oceanside Public Schools. I believe that Oceanside is still one of the best school districts on the south shore. It is still a nice area, thanks to some of what I call "buffer" towns around us. Yes there have been changes, however all towns change. All in all, its a nice town. And as for the origional question asked by katodrums....I've heard the same rumers for years. I do know drug use is a concern of many parents, but it always was, and always will be.

Oceanside has changed. On Long Beach Rd., there aren't nearly as many VW Beetles stacked up on top of each other as there used to be

But we do have a spanking new parking lot where the Oceanside Motel used to stand. Only trouble is...there is no reason to park there.
Thanks Kate Murray...Im so glad you found a way to waste more of my $8000+ property tax $.

Thanks for the responses. It's reassuring to know that people who are still living in town and have an actual pulse on what's happening are able to dismiss the hearsay. I was hesitant to even put the first post up because I didn't want to feed any false rumors. And I agree that drugs have always been around and always will be. Just didn't know if it had turned into a seriously deteriorating situation.
I will, however, miss the East Bay Diner. That's a change I'm not thrilled with. Do we really need another CVS?
