We are in the process of looking for a town that would fit our needs. We have 3 boys under 5, one is about to start k. Our main priorities are good school, no more than 1hr to penn station, and ideally a nice community for our kids to grow up in.
We went to some open houses in hidden ridge. It seems like you get a lot for the price. Of ourse taxes are high but they're high anywhere in good school districts. Plus maintenance fees, but seeing that there are home listed for under 500k, still seems like a better deal than manhasset or Roslyn- other top districts. So are there any cons to this community or to syosset in general?
Thanks for your help and insight

IMHO Hidden Ridge is a nice, tucked away development; the name is very appropriate. And now that shopping is literally around the corner, you have a lot of conveniences there. I know people who are long time residents and have been in some of the units; I thought they were very nice. Some have basements, some do not - something to look out for. Oh, and no garage
Easy access to highways, short driving distance to LIRR; parking can be tough at the train station unless you get there early.
You don't have a downtown, but if that's important to you, Huntington is not that far from there.
We lived in "The Ridge" for 6 years and recently sold and bought a house in syosset. Coming from the city it was a great transition. Landscaping, pool, tennis, guard at gate. The elementary school, Willits, is fabulous, very warm and nurturing. We were sad to leave the school. There are units with 2 car garage and a basement on the green belt (hidden ridge dr). In 06-07 they sold in the 700-800+, now you can get it for upper 5's to mid 6'. The heating is elecric so your winter lipa bills can get alittle scary. We liked living there but ultimately needed more space and a private back yard. You should also check out the woodlands and the greens, two other townhouse communities that go to syosset schools. Also, my husband commutes to Penn station everyday. It's doable.
Lots of families with kids mixed with empty nesters and divorcees. We practically filled up our own elementary school bus w kids just from hidden ridge. Pool is great in summer. They have a kids Halloween party in the club house, and people from all around syosset come to trick or treat there bc it's so safe/easy.
