I kinda support stuff if it's directly to the kids benefit.
Teachers salaries and perks, not so much. Anything that makes the teacher's job easier or more efficient, I'm ok with that too.
I'm sure they may have over ordered a few items and some of the staff may have ended up with one.
Gee, maybe they should all use abacus' and mimeograph machines...oh wait, they still do use mimeograph machines. What's wrong with iPads? They are in the same cost range as laptops. Welcome to earth, it's 2010, not 1985. I'd be thrilled if my kid got to use an iPad and I pay enough in taxes that he should be able to do so. The administrators need a frying pan to the back of the head for the ridiculous amount of money they make, but the kids damn well SHOULD have the newest and the best for what we pay.
Total start up cost was "about $50,000". As a long time custodian I laugh at that statement while knowing what 10 yr old kids will do to these units. Add these to the recent addition of $3,000 SmartBoards and $500 Proximas with their $250 yearly replacement bulb and what we simply have is another techno money pit akin to the half dozen computers in each classroom which sit unused unless they are utilized as storage shelves. Are kids smarter because of these "tools"?
So BigBlue...why don't you share the number of lunch "boxes" left in the cafeteria each year. I have some nice insulated cooler bags thanks to my friend who worked as a custodian.
Can you imagine how many of these Ipads will be lost by the end of the year?
I would say out of each class of 25 kids...safely 8 to 10 will be dropped or liquid damaged. One or two will be stolen or disappear. If they were like my kids.......25 of 25 dropped.
