The new cops are cheap as hell compared to the old-timers that they will be replacing.

Also, one the overtime dries up all the current cops will leave. If they stay on, they'll be losing money versus collecting their pension from home.

None of these cops make tons of money on straight time. They make a killing on the overtime. They only get so much overtime because the force is seriously understaffed. The solution is pretty easy.
rest assured if the need for overtime does still exist, it will go to those at the top so they can enhance their already ridiculously high pensions. Hopefully someone at the top prevents this from happening.

Speaking of overtime, why are there still a gazillon St. Patrick's Day parades for an entire month, a LI marathon (today) , etc. etc. permitted when all these events require heavy police presence (all on overtime, I assume?).
I thought Nassau county was in a fiscal crisis.

I believe that is exactly the county's plan, but it will take time. They can only have so many in a class at a time.

Good point if they actually hired enough they could come close to eliminating overtime and also reducing pension. They could even hire more cops as the are no maximum staffing standards but that would actually require the NCPD management to actually notice that those close to retirement are getting all the overtime, really asking quite a bit based on their past performance.

Yes we should just ignore absurd cost increases and contracts because of there is corruption on Wall Street, makes sense.

my taxes and yours support these ridiculous benefits to the tune of many thousands of dollars per year. Not true about the banks.

The tax increase did not come close to covering the deficit and now it will be eliminated, can't wait to see the math on this one. Scrambling to avoid voting a tax increase before the election.

I recall Kaiman and NIFA indicating they expected a balanced budget from Nassau in return for approving the union contracts.

The Nassau County Legislature's Republican majority has moved to eliminate
the property tax hike in GOP County Executive Edward Mangano's 2015 budget
proposal -- saying it "always intended" to do so.

Lawmakers late Wednesday filed amendments to Mangano's $2.98 billion spending
plan, setting up a vote by the full 19-member body Wednesday.

Republicans in Nassau legislature aim to cut Mangano property tax hike from 2015 budget - Newsday

The problem is PATRONAGE and CONTRACTS for political donors. During the wage freeze contracts were never frozen for MANGANO's friends, PATRONAGE was hired and given raises while $25,000 a year union workers were laid off. Mangano has made ZERO attempt to cut spending. You can't run a county on 2001's tax roll without cutting expenses! He has raised every fee in the county for a backdoor tax so he can give the ILLUSION that he never raised taxes!
