Hi I hope to get some constructive advice from neighbors here...If I want to put hot tub outdoors but my electric wiring runs diagonally across my yard can I ask PSEG to move the pole to one side of my yard so wires are to the side for clearance? And would it cost me anything? Also I found out the pole is owned by VERIZON, would that complicate matters? Or would PSEG just put up their own pole for me? And why does Verizon have poles, is it only for the few that still use landlines? Thanks for your advice!
No way they are going to move a pole for just you for free, I don't think they will move it period because of spacing requirements. Plenty of people still use landlines and FIOS services.
They don't have to run electric from the house to the pole, they can run the power lines to any point where the wires in the back run across and do a midspan.
You can pay for the wires to be run underground but I would also check easement laws. Either way, if the lines are moved or if a new pole has to be put up (which I doubt they'll do), it will be your expense. Poles are only removed if they are hazardous (damaged).
How far above hot tub will wires be? We had same concerns 25 yrs ago when we wanted to put up a pool. LIPA (maybe Lilco then) came by and said wires were more than 10' above pool and not an issue. Moving a pole? That's just not happening. Verizon does own poles because when they replaced old ones in neighborhood it was five yrs before they removed old ones.
To bury lines is cost prohibitive especially since that "new hot tub" thrill will wane after a couple years.
First determine what wires need to be moved. Verizon, Cablevision or Electric. If all three, call all three and see if they can be re-routed mid-span to eliminate where they will cross over your project. If any of them cannot, ( usually the electric) then you need to get the pole moved or a nother pole placed. This is done by the owner of the pole. If Verizon is the owner, get in touch with the local Verizon Engineering Department. They will send out the local Outside Plant Engineer to inspect. He can draw up a Customer Work Order which after you see what the cost to you; you can pay to have it done. This is VERY Expensive.
An alternative would be to trench in 2 pvc pipes from your house to the base of the pole, one for electric ( 4") and one for catv & telco (2") in the same trench. ( min 3" deep) this can be done yourself if you follow local guidelines.
