Anyone know the best way to get rid of the smell? Had a coupling that came loose on my oil tank in the basement that leaked a small amount of heating oil in the basement that we cleaned up, however, the smell is still there. Have the windows open in the basement and a box fan running to suck the smell out but it's still pretty bad. I heard using white vinegar or fresh coffee grounds work.... wanted to know if there was anything else I could get from Home Depot to really speed the process up?
Thanks everyone- tank looked like it was on its last leg and we decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new 275 gallon tank and start the process of swapping it out. Concrete is going to be cleaned with Step 1 Step 2 and then covered with killz. Let's hope it works out.
The oil company may also have something that's a flowery smell. When they swapped a tank out for me many years ago they spilled about a gallon which migrated into the crawl space (outside tank). I called them on it and the tech came out and spread a bunch of the stuff around. Had to also use kitty litter later to soak up any remnants.
Im pretty sure it will remove the oil , not so sure about the smell, but get some brake cleaner from the auto parts store. Look for the CRC red can. Wear surgical gloves if you have them and spray around the spill area in a area slightly larger than than the spill. Use paper towels to blot up the residue . It will clean the oil up, I use this method when I do oil changes and spill some oil on concrete. I works with pavers also. On blacktop it works ,but area cleaned will look lighter in color. Do it more than once.Goodluck
You can also try odor absorbing products that come in a plastic jar, it has scented beads in them and it absorbs odors. Not a solution but more of an added odor remover on top of everything else you plan to do.
