My zip code is 11746, which apparently puts me in zone 7a.

I want to grow Camellia sinensus, which is the classic tea plant. But I'm having trouble finding information on how to go about it here on Long Island spcifically. Any help would be appreciated.

Other types of camellias are pretty much at their natural limit for cold here. Those in exposed locations can get damaged in harsher winters, however those in more sheltered spots do pretty well; the soil here is very condusive to their growth. I don't know if the "tea" type of camellia is less hardy than the common camellia but if its the same you should give it a try. Just keep it out of windy, exposed locations.

I would grow it in a pot and bring it inside for the winter as this site suggests
Tea Plants (Camellia sinensis): 4" Pot: Logee's Greenhouses

According to this site someone managed to grow it in Brooklyn:
