My family and I are moving to hempstead. I did some research and the schools are terrible. However there is a garden city school the Stewart School that is 5 minutes away. Our house is right on the border between the two. Is it possible for me kids to attend that school? What do I have to do?

If your address listed as Hempstead school, then you are stuck with Hempstead. You didn't find out school district in beginning? If you rent, you might want to find another place. Hempstead school is really not that great.

Nope if you are zoned for Hempstead that's the schools you have to attend, it's irrelevant how close you are to a GC school.

I know how you feel. When we were looking for a home, we saw a beautiful house in RVC only 3 blocks from South Side H.S. but was zoned for Baldwin. We visited the house as we considered private schools, but ended up not putting in an offer. What was ironic is the seller was looking to move into a RVC zoned home and leave private school.

You would need to pay tuition to GC school district. And it would be on par with private school cost.
There is a small section of Hempstead that is GC schools. It's a cul de sac off Lindbergh St. If you live there you're golden.

What area of Hempstead are you moving to? Street or at least general vicinity.

Sounds like you'll fit in just fine in Hempstead.

Really? So you could pay public schools directly through tuition and disregard zoning?

No. You have to live in the district borders to attend their schools. Otherwise everyone would do this.
