ifixit has a pictorial step-by-step guide. It's what I followed and I replaced the charge port on my iPhone 4S in about 15 mins. I ordered my own parts and tools from ifixit also. I think it cost me about $50.
I called places nearby that specialize in this stuff for a quote, and it would have easily cost me double. You might get a peace of mind maybe, but they're basically just dexterous geeks. Typically no formal training or education in electronics. Forget about counting on them using genuine OEM parts or being authorized from the brands they work on, especially the ones in the mall. Still have a peace of mind?
Also, Radio Shack filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy recently, so I wouldn't count on a warranty of their work or after service support of any sort.
There are two that I know. One is in Bellmore, on the side street behind King Kullen on Sunrise Hwy. The other is right near the Syosset, LIRR station.
