Wow. I wish you luck, sincerely. Hopefully, you can afford it and afford to furnish it, too!

Almost in the same boat as you. Mortgage was 2500 a month, plus 900 a month for taxes, and throw in roughly another 100 for homeowners. $3500 a month just to have a roof over our head. Never mind heating & cooling it, and keeping the place lit at night.

Now it's 1600 a month for mortgage, and 70 a month for taxes (that's right, it's not a typo...I pay around 850 a year in taxes) and throw in around 110 a month for homeowners.

We're saving 1700 a month just on the roof over our head part.

Long Island is a great place to raise a family if you can afford it. If not, the world is a big place with a lot cheaper options.

Are you okay with the schools down there?

Yes schools are a major consideration. LI has some of the best schools around. So you get what you pay for in that respect. But if your son/daughter doesn't care about school or learning they will not do better just because they are from LI. Then there are so many more considerations about moving. Family, job and other things that you find important in life.

I don't necessarily believe that LI schools are the best. I think we are some of the most expensive, though. I'm always curious how LI transplants handle county schools. Are you doing private school? Do you think your child is challenged enough if he/she is in public school? How did the kids adjust?
