Oh hell no! I've had that feeder out there for many years and have plenty of Grey Squirrels and Chipmunks hanging around, none have breached my home. In fact, I live in the woods...in their home! Anyway, I think the little guy is charming, and it seems to not mind me standing near it on my deck. I'm still a bit surprised that there are Southern Flying Squirrels on L.I. !

My vacation home up north is truly in the woods along with black bear, fisher cats, and other critters. I used to put the feeder out after hibernation started. It attracted birds, chipmunks, grey & red squirrels, along with the flying squirrels. They enter the house (which is near the source of food) looking for warmth, just like field mice. After the infestation, I no longer feed the birds.
Trust me about those flying squirrels. They're cute as all get out, but will wreak havoc once they've entered the home. Enjoy watching their antics, but consider yourself warned.

I appreciate you sharing your experiences with these critters. Of course, upstate N.Y. is WAY different from here on L.I. as far as "woods" and wildlife goes. As I mentioned, there has been no problems with any critters into my home here.
And...this is why I'll not empty my feeder: A Rose Breasted Grosbeak paid a visit last spring; I have never seen one of these on L.I. before or since...(sorry, crappy pic)

Saw one on my feeder about a month ago. I think they hit LI in May/June on their way back from down south.

Had plenty of flying squirrels when I lived in Manorville. They came for the suet feeders. Now I am in Wading River and have Rose breasted grosbeaks every year. Beautiful! Nothing was more fun, bird wise, than having Pileated woodpeckers at the suet when I lived in Pa. I like your thinking- we are in THEIR home and we need to appreciate them all and live with them.
