How do these numbers not make people nauseous? Paying $1,000 per month or higher for the privilege of living in whatever town you're living in is insane. And now that's considered "reasonable"?
Like others are saying it depends on the town. But from a marketing standpoint, it definitely seems to make a difference (it did for us). When we were recently searching for a home, if the listing description said something like "Taxes were never grieved" or "taxes are currently being grieved", then you can bet the taxes were like $16k+ in the area we were looking in (Plainview/Syosset). I also noticed that home sale prices are somewhat inversely proportionate to the property tax. Houses that were <$11,000 in taxes for the area sold for a good amount more than a similar house (same bdrm/baths and quality) with >$14,000 in taxes. One of our criteria for looking for our home was taxes <$14,000. Not sure if this was the best thing to do (we may have precluded some homes that otherwise fit our criterion) but too late now (we expect to close soon).

Depends on your income.
