Hypothetical question: Let's say I have a 1yr contract with service for oil, at a fixed/ceiling rate of $3.50. And the COD rate goes down to $2.00. My oil company makes deliveries once a month. What if I get filled up in between, via COD? How will my oil company know? Is there a difference in the kind of oil between companies? Will they say that my tank is filled up and smell something fishy? I can just say that I've not been home and not using hot water or heat, right?
Thanks. But how will the company know that I used COD? Is the COD oil different from the company oil? Is all oil the same?
if you're an existing customer, the oil company that you are contracted with has a pretty good idea of your expected use from your past records. our company magically arrives when the tank is down to one quarter.

I currently use oil for hot water and heat.
I wouldn't do it - but that's just me. I personally don't think its worth the hassle in case you get caught doing it.
However, every year when my contract expired. I used to top off using COD and then sign up for a new contract.
OP think what you are saying...say you use 200 gallons in January. Then your contract company comes and refills. Then you use the COD company to deliver 100 gallons half way thru February. Then contract company comes to fill at end of month but it will only take 100 gallons. Big red flag right there. lol. Not only that but to get the best price with COD you have to purchase over 200 gallons.
